Week 1, Day 1

So I must have overestimated my fitness level...

I was doing really well with an incline trainer when I was in the states. That is, until I developed bronchitis from the remodel dust at work (grumble, grumble.) So I naturally assumed that I'd do ok on week 1, day 1 of this C25K program. I downloaded the iPod app so I could listen to m'tunes and still be on track.

I thought it would be nice to run in Phoenix Park. I've never been there outside of a tourist bus and I've always had a hard time with the monotony of the gym. Unfortunately, I live in Ireland. As I walked out the door and discovered the torrential downpour that was waiting for me, I decided that I have to activate my gym membership anyway, so I might as well jump on the treadmill at the Trinity Sports Centre.

So I trekked down to Trinity and did my thing - Brisk warm up, then run for 60 sec, walk for 90 sec...repeat 8 times. I felt a little ambitious at first, setting my walk speed to 6km/hr (3.7mph) and my running speed to 8.5km/hr (5.2mph). Had I been at Phoenix Park, I think I would have self regulated my speeds, however as there was a moving belt forcing my ambition, I ran myself out within the first 10 minutes. Eventually I had to reduce both my walking and running speeds quite a bit. My heart rate was well over 185 and I felt like dying...

...but I did it.

31 minutes - it isn't impressive, but I did it, and if I keep with it consistently, I really think I will be able to run 3 miles at the end of 9 weeks.

Now I'm taking a shower. I'm pretty sure some of the bushes I walked past on my way home withered at my scent.

Until next time...
